49ers' Trent Williams & Ricky Pearsall: Injury Updates Before Eagles Playoff Game (2026)

Trent Williams, the left tackle for the San Francisco 49ers, has expressed a strong sense of optimism regarding his participation in Sunday’s wild-card matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite being labeled as a game-time decision, Williams confidently stated on Friday that he believes he will be ready to play. Meanwhile, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall's status remains uncertain.

Both athletes were marked as questionable on Friday’s injury report. However, there’s a notable difference in their situations: Williams has managed to practice with some limitations over the past two days, while Pearsall has not seen any practice time this week.

Williams, who is recovering from a hamstring strain, admitted that he is coming back sooner than ideally recommended.

"Honestly, I’m kind of pushing the limits on how much time is required for it," he explained in front of reporters at his locker on Friday. "So it will probably be in the back of my mind for a little bit. But once I get out there and get the juices flowing and the adrenaline going, I don’t think it should be a big problem."

The injury occurred on December 28 when Williams was chasing down a linebacker from the Chicago Bears during the very first snap of the game. He revealed that he reached nearly 18 mph while pursuing the defender. Although this isn't his fastest speed, the intensity of that first play might have left his legs underprepared. At 37 years old, this incident marked the first time Williams has ever experienced a hamstring strain.

"When I felt it, I kept running because I didn’t really know exactly what it was then. As I started to slow down, the discomfort started to get a little more consistent. That’s when I realized I did something," he recounted.

Williams’ positive outlook on his ability to contribute this Sunday is encouraging news for the 49ers. Since the 2020 season, the team boasts an impressive record of 61 wins and only 32 losses with Williams on the field, but that number drops dramatically to just 4 wins against 13 losses without him.

On the other hand, Pearsall’s complete absence from practice casts significant doubt on his chances of playing. He aggravated a knee injury during the game against the Bears and was sidelined for the following week’s contest against the Seattle Seahawks. Throughout the season, Pearsall has faced various injuries, limiting him to just nine games. His performance hasn’t matched the breakout season many anticipated, with him accumulating only 36 receptions for 528 yards thus far.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that there remains a possibility for Pearsall to play despite his lack of participation in Friday's practice. Earlier in the week, Pearsall had been seen running and catching passes on a separate field during Thursday’s session, but he evidently was unable to replicate that effort the next day.

Pearsall’s name appears on the injury report as questionable, alongside six other players from the 49ers roster. He was unable to play last week due to a flare-up of his posterior cruciate ligament injury, a situation that severely limited the team’s offensive capabilities against the Seahawks. The absence of Pearsall's speed and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one matchups was glaringly obvious as they struggled offensively.

In the previous game, without both Williams and Pearsall, the 49ers offense faltered significantly against the Seahawks. After an impressive score of 42 points the week before, they could only muster a mere 3 points against Seattle’s formidable defense. Star running back Christian McCaffrey managed to gain just 23 yards, with quarterback Brock Purdy completing 19 of his 27 passes for a total of 127 yards, along with an interception.

As the 49ers prepare to face one of the league’s top defenses in the Eagles, having their full roster available becomes crucial. The Philadelphia Eagles are known for their robust cornerbacks and powerful pass rush, emphasizing the importance of Williams’ and Pearsall’s potential return to action.

Additionally, linebacker Dee Winters (ankle), defensive lineman Keion White (groin), linebacker Luke Gifford (quadriceps), receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring), and cornerback Renardo Green (foot) have also been listed as questionable for the upcoming game.
