While some delegates, like Dave Cundiff, MD, MPH, supported this idea, others, including Jason Goldman, MD, president of the American College of Physicians (ACP), warned against it. Goldman argued that the cost of creating a new committee would be exorbitant and that the AMA should instead focus on reinstating the original ACIP.
The Cost and Complexity of Change
Goldman's concerns were not limited to financial implications. He highlighted the intricate web of insurance coverage tied to the ACIP's recommendations under the Affordable Care Act. Replacing the ACIP with an 'alternative' committee, he argued, would be a costly and complex endeavor.

Sandra Fryhofer, MD, a former ACIP liaison, agreed with Goldman, emphasizing the need to restore the original intent of these entities. Virginia Dato, MD, representing the American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP), stressed the importance of evidence-based recommendations free from conflicts of interest. With the rapid shift in vaccine recommendations from various sources, Dato argued for a coordinated and transparent process to ensure reliable guidance for the public.

Not all delegates were optimistic about returning to the pre-Kennedy era. Abhishek Dharan, MD, a delegate from the Resident and Fellows Section, believed the nation had undergone a fundamental change. He suggested the AMA should consider a new approach to vaccine recommendations, one that empowers the house of medicine rather than relying on government decisions.
