Anil Kapoor Buys Rights to Cult Classic 'Nayak' - Is a Sequel Finally Happening? (2026)

Imagine a world where an ordinary man gets a taste of ultimate power and uses it to shake up the system. That's the magic of 'Nayak,' a film that initially stumbled at the box office but has since become a beloved cult classic. And now, get ready for this: Anil Kapoor, the star of the original, is reportedly taking matters into his own hands to bring us a sequel!

Anil Kapoor's career is studded with gems, but 'Nayak' (released in 2001) holds a special place in the hearts of many. This political drama, directed by Shankar, tells the story of a television reporter who, through a twist of fate, becomes the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a single, transformative day. While it didn't set the box office on fire during its initial release, 'Nayak' has steadily gained a massive following over the years, and fans have been clamoring for a sequel for what feels like forever. Now, it seems their wishes might finally come true.

Bollywood Hungama has exclusively learned that Anil Kapoor is actively pursuing a 'Nayak' sequel. A source close to the situation revealed, "Producer Deepak Mukut, known for 'Sanam Teri Kasam' (2016), previously owned the rights to 'Nayak.' But Anil Kapoor has acquired those rights from him. He wants to safeguard the film, as it's incredibly dear to him. More importantly, he has aspirations to create a sequel. He recognizes the immense love the film has received over the years, and he strongly believes that the core concept of 'Nayak' offers incredible potential for a second installment."

We reached out to Deepak Mukut for confirmation on whether he had indeed sold the rights to Anil Kapoor, but he was unavailable for comment. But here's where it gets controversial... Could this mean we might see a completely different take on the 'Nayak' universe with Kapoor at the helm?

Interestingly, in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama back in March 2024, Deepak Mukut mentioned, "I obtained the rights from 'Nayak's producer, Mr. A. S. Rathnam. I also possess the negative rights to his other films, such as 'Tejasvini' (1994) and 'Dil Hi Dil Mein' (1999), among others. I acquired these rights approximately 10 years ago." This adds another layer to the story, highlighting the journey of the film's rights before potentially landing with Anil Kapoor.

'Nayak' wasn't just about Anil Kapoor; it boasted a stellar cast, including Rani Mukerji, the legendary Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Johny Lever, Shivaji Satam, and Neena Kulkarni. Pooja Batra made a cameo appearance, and Sushmita Sen sizzled in a special song. The film's narrative revolves around the reporter's 24-hour stint as Chief Minister and the sweeping changes he implements, ultimately transforming him into a national icon. And this is the part most people miss... The film subtly questions the very nature of power and whether true change can be achieved within existing systems.

Adding fuel to the fire, at FICCI Frames 2025, Anil Kapoor responded to Devendra Fadnavis’ comment, “Aap Nayak aur hum Nalayak,” by saying, “The timing couldn’t be BETTER for Nayak 2!” This statement strongly suggests that plans for a sequel are indeed in motion.

So, what do you think? Is a 'Nayak' sequel a brilliant idea, or should some classics be left untouched? What kind of story would you like to see in a potential sequel? Would you prefer a continuation of the original story, or a completely new narrative with a similar theme? Share your thoughts in the comments below! We want to know if you're excited about the possibility of seeing Anil Kapoor back in action as the people's hero!
