A bizarre error by Forest goalkeeper John Victor gifted McGinn his second goal, as he calmly sidestepped the keeper and slotted into an empty net from outside the area.
The win took Villa to 42 points, one ahead of Manchester City. Forest, suffering their fourth straight league defeat, remain just above the relegation zone, four points clear of West Ham, who were thrashed 3-0 by bottom-of-the-table Wolves. 'The first half was embarrassing, and I have to apologise to the fans; this is not what we want to show,' said West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
