Cambridgeshire's Major Road Upgrade: A New Slip Road and Improved Traffic Flow
The A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet improvements are well underway, with a new 10-mile dual carriageway set to transform travel between Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. This ambitious project, expected to be completed in spring 2027, will not only enhance connectivity but also significantly reduce congestion. One of the key features of this upgrade is the transformation of the Caxton Gibbet roundabout into a modern two-level junction, allowing for seamless transitions between the A421, A428, and A1198.
The construction process has been meticulous, with work focusing on building the new roundabout and realigning traffic during the first half of 2025. In June, a significant milestone was reached as traffic was redirected onto the newly constructed road, marking a crucial step towards the project's completion. The next phase involves the installation of lift beams on the flyover bridge, a critical component in the overall design.
Paul Salmon, the senior project manager for National Highways at Black Cat, shared an update on the project's progress: "The A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet Improvements are progressing smoothly, and many of the upgrades are taking shape. The bridge beams for the new flyover at Caxton Gibbet are already on site and will be lifted into place in the New Year. The bridge is set to open alongside the rest of the scheme in spring 2027."
Additionally, National Highways has announced that the new slip road from the northern roundabout to the current A428 eastbound will open in early 2026. This development is expected to alleviate congestion in the eastern section of the project, further enhancing the overall efficiency of the road network.
