The study, published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, highlights the probe's ability to reveal the Milky Way's hidden black hole population.
Autonomous Discovery:
The EP mission's autonomous capabilities were demonstrated with the detection of EP240801a. This transient event was immediately followed up by the probe's FXT instrument, revealing an extremely soft X-ray flash. Such flashes are rare and provide valuable insights into gamma-ray bursts and stellar core-collapse events.
