Dungy, who led the Indianapolis Colts to Super Bowl XLI victory, believes that the focus on race as the primary factor in hiring decisions is misguided. In an interview with OutKick's Dan Dakich, Dungy emphasized the importance of looking beyond race and considering other factors that contribute to a coach's success. He suggested that the media should investigate why there are no strong candidates of color, rather than assuming that white owners are intentionally excluding black coaches. Dungy also highlighted the example of Seahawks head coach Mike McDonald, who was overlooked until Seattle GM John Schneider gave him a chance. While Dungy acknowledged that Brian Flores and current Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph were passed over, he attributed this to other factors beyond race. He emphasized that his own experiences as an assistant coach, where he was passed over for head coaching positions due to his demeanor and personality, demonstrate that race is not the sole determinant of a coach's success. Dungy concluded by stating that while race may be a factor, it is not the biggest one, and that there are more complex considerations at play in the NFL's coaching hires.
