The Vancouver Art Gallery has received a groundbreaking donation from a mysterious Hong Kong-based collector, comprising 131 works by 78 artists. Dubbed the Art Continuum Hong Kong (ACHK), this collection is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Hong Kong. Spanning three decades, the ACHK collection captures the social, political, and cultural evolution of Hong Kong's art scene, from the mid-20th century to the present. It includes diverse art forms such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, film, installation, and lens-based media. This generous gift is the largest contribution of Hong Kong art in the gallery's history.
The collection's significance lies in its ability to showcase the diverse artistic expressions of Hong Kong, reflecting the city's unique cultural identity. It features works by renowned Hong Kong artists like Luis Chan, Irene Chou, Tsang Kin Wah, Wesley Tongson, Sin Wai Kin, and Wucius Wong, as well as contributions from Hong Kong-born, Vancouver-based artists such as Howie Tsui and Lam Tung Pang. This diverse range of artists and their works will enrich the gallery's permanent collection.
The donation symbolizes the strong cultural ties between Vancouver and Hong Kong. Initially driven by the 1980s real estate boom, where Hong Kongers sought refuge in Vancouver's serene landscapes, the relationship has now expanded into the realm of art. The VAG will celebrate this gift with an exhibition in 2027, marking the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong's sovereignty transfer from the UK to China.
This donation is particularly beneficial for the VAG's Centre for Global Asias, launched in November 2024 to commemorate the gallery's Institute of Asian Art's tenth anniversary. The centre's name change and C$1.6m donation for Asian art enhancement were inspired by Pico Iyer's philosophy that 'everywhere is made up of everywhere else' and 'home is where you become yourself.' Sirish Rao, the gallery's interim co-chief executive, emphasized the centre's role in exploring diverse Asian experiences, reflecting Vancouver's half-Asian population, including significant Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, and Iranian communities. The centre aims to amplify these experiences into a cosmopolitan, transnational narrative, showcasing the richness of Asian art and culture.
